Elevator Speech 101

You strike up some small talk with another business professional as you wait for your elevator to the ground floor.  As you step into your elevator with your new friend, you discover that he is your ideal client. 

Do you know what to say to him before your hit the ground floor and go your separate ways? 

If you do, or if you don't, last Thursday was a great meeting to attend because we opened up with practicing our elevator speeches. 

Everybody partnered up and had 30 seconds to deliver their elevator speech.  It was interesting to get the feedback from our partners, seeing what point they took away and if they understood the call to action.   Hopefully everybody was able to take the input from their partners to improve their speech so when the real thing comes along, they know how to deliver.

Your Sales Force

Just to refresh everybody's memory, as a member of our chapter, you will have an opportunity to greet, showboat and speak in front of the chapter at least twice a year.  This is your opportunity to help the chapter get to know you, and help them understand more of the value that your provide to your clients.  As a speaker, this is your time to educate us on what you do and how the other members can help build up your business.

This week, we heard from Ryan Clardy of Canopy HR Solutions and Erin Fong, now at Ritual Salon in University Heights.  As you can see on the right, Anne Pettay was our showboater.  If you haven't done so already, we really recommend checking out their Living Balance Sheet web site.  It's an online tool that helps you get a detailed picture of your financial health.

Ryan Clardy was our first speaker today, showing us how outsourcing your business's payroll functions helps you avoid getting bogged down in managing your own payroll, net breakdowns, taxes, deposits and filings so you can focus more on developing your business.

We learned how dedicated Erin Fong is to her craft as she gave us a science lesson in hair coloring.  After explaining to us how natural hair color, delayed oxydation, heat styling, and the molecular size of hair dye, we were able to understand how the products that she uses helps give her clients longer lasting color.  I'd try to explain it here, but you'd probably be better off getting it from the source, Erin.

Erin also shared with us that the past weekend, at her salon's 'Care-naval', they were able to raise around $1200 for Rady's Children Hospital.  Way to go!

Hey Big Tipper

The clock is ticking towards the close of this month's Big Tipper Contest.  Who's going to give the most tips to Karen, this month's lucky member?  Will Debbie be able to hang on to her lead?  There's still a little time left, so send those tips to Karen, our skin care & cosmetics person.  Remember, whoever gives the most tips, gets $100 and $50 to the next two runner's up.

In observation of Labor Day, we're not going to be having a meeting this Thursday, September 3.  We hope everybody enjoys the long Labor Day weekend and look forward to reconnecting with everybody at our next meeting, on September 10.

Stretch Your Networking Skills

Stability and flexibility are two important traits for any successful business.  Today, Mikel started us off by practicing those principles in our own bodies with a couple of yoga poses.

Today we had Mike Selman from from ACN Communications join us.  It was interesting learning how his company helps you increase your bottom line by reducing your phone and internet bills.

We were also introduced to Sarah Wynn, a key member of the Seth O'Byrne Team.  It's great to start meeting the people who make up the top rated real estate team in La Jolla.

We Fix, We Clean, We Paint

Our first speaker was Mike Calabrese, our chapter's Painting Contractor.  It was interesting learning how painting runs in Mike's family and how Mike initially learned about the painting trade from his two uncles.  Mike has been serving the San Diego and Southern California area for the last 8 years now and his diverse portfolio includes custom homes, remodels, commercial buildings, tilt-up buildings, new construction, track homes, and even army barracks.

Massage: More than just a relaxing treat

Florence Casiez then spoke about the many health benefits of massage other than just the obvious benefit of relaxation.  The additional health benefits of the various modalities of massage that Florence employs include:

Chris Wilson, Endoxi ArtChris Wilson showcased all the art he had created for his band Endoxi. Stickers, Cd's, banners, cards, T-Shirts & tank tops. Also, he passed out some copies of Endoxi's 'New Blood, Old Soul' CD. This was a great way to experience both sides of Chris' artistic world.

Mike warmed us up with a partner's stretching exercise where we paired up and took turns gently pulling each other arms back to open the chest muscle and get the blood flowing.

Unfortunately, our chapter lost it's most eligible bachelor last week.  Fortunately, we look forward to Mike Deibler's return after his and Emily's wedding and honey moon.  We sent him off on his honey moon with a wedding gift and our best wishes.

Bill is currently using his quick speaking skills as a Real Estate Auctioneer, there is a very fun video of the 'Bill Menish experience' on his website - here. Bill took us through an auctioneer 101 warm up. He called out 10 or so short tounge twisters like 'bitty betty bitter batter' and had us repeat them, then he showed how a real auctioneer does it, saying all them contiguously and a blazing speed. It was quite impressive!

Referral Roundtable : This week was our monthly roundtable, and we had a special guest speaker Kris Thomspon from the coaching firm of Eric Lofholm International. Kris embodied so much of what we strive for in letip. He spoke of the importance of spefic details when requesting a referals and leads. He drew the comparison of typing in 'car' in google verses typing in 'convette'. Too often we generalize what we ask for and making it harder for other to help us, because there's too many things that match. To help other help you, you need to prioritize what you are looking for and ask for that spefic lead. For example, I should not ask for people looking for a graphic artist, but instead ask for people looking for a logo.  When you focus your requests, you'll find more leads.

As always, august is a slow month with many of you on vacation. I hope you are enjoying your summer, and look forward to seeing the full group this fall.
